A city has 5 houses for every 8 old houses. If there are 35 new houses in the city, how many old houses are there?

Answer:

56 old houses

Explanation:

For every 8 old houses there are 5, so there are 3 more.

For this reason, if there are 35 houses, it means that there are 5 times the houses.

So if we multiply 3 by 5 (which is the difference between old and new houses) it would give 21, which when adding it to 35 gives 56
