A piece of wire 100 cm long is cut into two​ pieces, each to be bent to make a square. The length of a side of one square is to be 4 cm longer than the length of a side of the other. How should the wire be​ cut?

The two pieces will be 42 and 58 cms long.

Explanation:

Let the length of the smallest square be x cm.

Then the length of the other will be x + 4 cm

So, as there are 4 sides in a square, we have the equation:

4x + 4(x + 4) = 100

8x + 16 = 100

8x = 84

x = 10.5 cm.

So we need 4*10.5 = 42 cms for one square and 4 * 14.5 = 58 cms for th other square.
