Remembering the Cheyenne People
By Asha Jarvis

Many Native American tribes lived in the Great Plains. This is a region mostly covered by grasslands and prairies. The Cheyenne tribe lived in this region. Before European settlers came, the Cheyenne had villages where they farmed for their food. It was only after Europeans came that they became nomadic hunters. Therefore, European settlement drastically changed how the Cheyenne lived.

Shelter

Cheyenne houses changed after Europeans arrived. The early Cheyenne lived in settled villages of earthen lodges. These were made of wood frames and packed with earth and grass. After the Europeans arrived, the Cheyenne became nomadic hunters. They moved from place to place. They lived in tepees that were easy to take down and rebuild. They were made of buffalo hide and wooden poles.
