Answer:

The unnamed man, a chechaquo, sets out for a hike through the forests bordering the Yukon River on a winter day where the temperature fell to -75°. The chechaquo decides to face the brutally cold temperatures of the Yukon Territory despite being warned by an older man. While ignored the warnings against traveling alone in such harsh conditions, he is accompanied only by a large husky.

The animal’s instinct warns the chechaquo about the dangers and extreme cold, but it reluctantly follows him. At half past noon, the man stops and builds a fire so he could warm up and eat his lunch. After resuming his hike, the ice breaks through and soaks up his feet and legs, making him stop and build up another fire so he could dry himself. He lights the fir, igniting all of his matches and burning himself during the process due to the numbness in his hands.

With no other way to start a new fire, the man thinks of killing the dog in hopes that it’s body heat would save him, but with his hands so stiff and numb, he could neither strangle the animal nor draw his knife through its throat.

The man feels the cold gradually freezing him to his core, and he ultimately falls asleep and dies of hypothermia. The dog leaves his body after dark to find food and shelters at the camp.
