As the story progresses, each of the family members seem to modify their behavior toward Gregor and he sees himself differently as the attitudes of his family change.
Directions: Using the chart below, identify each character’s attitude and behavior toward Gregor and Gregor’s attitude toward himself as the story continues. At this time you should only fill in the first three rows relating to Before Metamorphosis, Part I, and Part II. In Section 6, you will return to this activity to complete the chart after you have finished the novel

Before Metamorphosis

Mr. Samsa- they were not close and there seemed to be a lot of distance between them, he also got into debt causing gregor to have to work off the debt

Mrs. Samsa- She had also brought debt upon her son leaving him to work off

Gregor- Hates his job and boss, seems very depressed and lonely, and puts others needs above his own

Grete- Has a good relationship with her brother

Part I

Mr. Samsa- He starts off being mad gregor won't leave his room and go to work once he found out gregor was a bug he was disgusted and became hostile towards him

Mrs. Samsa- She starts off being more concerned as to why gregor hasn't left the house and later she becomes scared of her son and his new appearance and dismisses his feelings in the end most likely unintentionally

Gregor- He ignores the main problem at hand, him being a beetle, and focuses on trying to go to work. By doing this he is once again forgetting about his own needs and focuses on providing for others. He was still thinking more as a human rather than a bug

Grete- She is concerned with gregor’s health she wants to know if he needs anything and she continues with wanting to help him

Part II

Mr. Samsa- He lacked any real sympathy for Gregor and seemed to try his hardest to distance himself and his family from gregor. He had little to no concern of gregor’s well being, and became physically abusive

Mrs. Samsa- At first she distanced herself from Gregor but later we see she is still wanting to see her son. In the end she would still faint at the sight of gregor.

Gregor- He starts to lose sight of his original human self and begins to think of what was more covenant for his current bug self. He was still concerned with the thoughts and feelings of others and continued to put himself in harm's way to do so

Grete- She was the first one to help Gregor, she was the one to bring him food, clean his room, and tried her best to be his spokesperson. Even with all her efforts, at times she would too be bothered with Gregor's new look.
