Explanation:

Q1 is the first quartile

Divide the data in half, that will get you Q2 or the second quartile

There are 13 data points so the middle is the 7th data point

2, 3, 5, 5, 6, 8, 8, 9, 10, 11, 11, 11, 12

Take the lower half of the data and divide it in half

There are 6 data points so the middle is between the 3rd and the 4th data point so we average them

2, 3, 5, 5, 6, 8,

(5+5)/2 = 10/2 = 5

The 1st quartile or Q1 = 5
