Answer:

Sitting low in deep ditches, an area of northern France and Belgium that saw combat between German troops and Allied forces from France, Great Britain and, later, the United States. Men in the war had to stay down if they wanted to live and if the Comander instructed them to go out to "No man's land" it was more likely for the men to die quicker making the deep 35,000 mile long trenches the safest spot. In the trenches, to keep the men occupied they would write letter to family or even read a book if they weren't shooting and fighting.
