Since the bigger square has sides of 2x+1 and the smaller has sides of x the difference of perimeters is

d=4(2x+1-x)

d=4(x+1)

d=4x+4, and d=16 so

4x+4=16

4x=12

x=3 so the smaller square has sides of 3 and an area of

A=x^2

A=3^2

A=9
