if the equations are y=18x-40 and y=10x-16 solve y for 18x-40 by substituting 18x-40 for the y in y=10x-16.

18x-40=10x-16

18x-40+-10x=10x-16+-10x

8x-40=-16

8x-40+40=-16+40

8x=24

8x/8=24/8

x=3

then substitute 3 for the x in y=18x-40

y=18(3)-40

y=14
