SPARTANBURG, S.C. – If we can’t remember the past, are we doomed to repeat it? If so, could the Holocaust happen again? Spartanburg Methodist College Professor of History, Dr. Kirk Hansen, says most Americans know about the Holocaust but don’t understand the details which led to the slaughter of more than six million Jews during World War II. In an upcoming talk, he’ll trace the events which lead to the Holocaust and make observations about the current political climate in Germany and more broadly throughout Europe.
Hansen’s talk, “A Jewish German Journey: From the Middle Ages to the Present,” will take place Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. in Davis Mission Chapel on the SMC campus. The talk is free, and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.
“A March 2018 survey by Schoen Consulting shows that over half of Americans believe Hitler took power by force, when he was actually democratically elected,” Hansen says. “Younger generations, particularly millennials, have a much looser grip on the details and broader context surrounding the Holocaust, which shapes how they think about the world around them today.”
Hansen, whose research interests include issues in modern European Jewry, holds a doctorate in history from the University of Dundee in Scotland.
