multiply eqn 1 by 2 and eqn 2 by 4

8x-6y=-20

8x+12y=16

subtract eqn 2 from 1

8x-8x ,12-(-6y)=16-(-20)

18y=36

divide both sides by 18

y=2

substitute y=2 in eqn 1

4x-3(2)=-10

4x-6=-10

4x=-10 + 6

4x= -4

divide both sides by 4

x= -1
