If B lies between A and C on a line segment, then ...

AB +BC = AC

(2x -17) +(x +1) = 14

3x = 30 . . . . . . . . . . . . . add 16, collect terms

x = 10 . . . . . . . . . . . divide by 3

AB = 2(10)-17 = 3

BC = 10+1 = 11
