The book is new moon. The event is when Edward decides to leave Bella so that she can live a normal life. When Edward leaves Bella gets depressed, she says that she has a gaping hole in her chest and that it makes her feel like she is crumbling into pieces. She lives in her head, trying to distract herself as much as possible so she has no time to think about her lost love. She has lost her will to live and she doesn’t believe that she even deserved the love that Edward once gave her.I believe the author includes this because for most people it seems that they are the only ones who seem to have no will to live. It touches on the topic and shows how in the end it got better but it took a long time.
