length=4 1/4

Explanation:

  1. 1 3/4 + 2 1/2
  2. convert 2 1/2 into 2/4 since 2 is half of 4
  3. add the converted number and 1 3/4 fractions
  4. 2/4 and 3/4 added will make 1 1/4
  5. add 1 1/4, 2 and 1 and it will equal 4 1/4
