If you drop a bouncing ball from a height of 40 cm, explain why it can only bounce back up to a height of less than 40 cm.

When the ball strikes the surface of the earth, the some of the kinetic energy could be converted into heat and sound energy. Due to the some energy loss, the ball could not bonce back to the original height from which height it falls. Explanation: At 40 cm, the ball is in rest position.
