Distance = (Rate)(Time)

Let x = speed of slower train

x + 17 = speed of faster train

The trains meet when the sum of the distances = 1285

5x + 5(x+17) = 1285

(5 came from 5 hours)

10x + 85 = 1285

10x = 1200

x = 120 mph

The speeds are 120 mph and 137 mph
