The foundation for a new building at the high school is rectangular in shape. The area of the foundation is 5x^3 + 4x^2 - 10x - 8 square meters. If the width equals (x^2 - 2) meters. What is the length of the rectangular foundation?

We should divide x^2-2 from the equation.

I will spare you from the boring steps of equation dividing.

Now getting 5x+4

Just do this like you are doing long division but instead using variables, be careful there is no x term in the second expression so you have to give it an empty space :)
