1. On December 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor , Hawaii Territory, killing more than 2,300 Americans. The U.S.S. Arizona was completely destroyed and the U.S.S. Oklahoma capsized.

2. In all, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor crippled or destroyed nearly 20 American ships and more than 300 airplanes. Dry docks and airfields were likewise destroyed. Most important, 2,403 sailors, soldiers and civilians were killed and about 1,000 people were wounded.

3. Some of their beliefs were due to racial prejudice against Japanese and Chinese people. A few Americans tried to tell the President and Congress that the Japanese had the capability to attack Hawaii and the mainland of the U.S., but these people were ignored until Dec. 7, 1941.
