4x + 2.5y = $460 ...............from Theory 2

Making x the subject:

x + y = 160

x = 160 - y ...........equation 1

4x + 2.5y = $460

4x = $460 - 2.5y

x = ($460 - 2.5y)/4 ..............equation 2

Solving both equations simultaneously:

160 - y = ($460 - 2.5y)/4

4(160 - y) = $460 - 2.5y

640 - 460 = - 2.5y + 4y

180 = 1.5y

y = 180/1.5

y = 120

Therefore there are 120 peanuts bags.

Then the number of cotton bags are: x + y = 160

: x + 120 = 160

: x = 40 cotton bags
