Ponyboy recites the Robert Frost poem "Stay Gold" to Johnny when they are hiding in the Windrixville Church. In the poem, "Nothing Gold Can Stay," it is stated that all wonderful things must end. When asked to remain innocent, Ponyboy is urged by Johnny to remain gold (or innocent).
