Answer: The DMD gene is located on the X chromosome, so Duchenne muscular dystrophy is an X-linked disease and mostly affects males because they have only one copy of the X-chromosome

DMD affects boys because the dystrophin gene is on the X chromosome. Chromosomes are the parts of your cells that contain your genes. Boys only have one X chromosome. Girls have two X chromosomes, one from each parent.
