when you have a function, you can only have one input for every output, like in A

{(5, 0), (-8, -5), (-8, 5), (-5, -8)}

we have -8 twice in the sets of numbers on the X, so this set is NOT a function

another way to tell is to plot out the points on the graph, then draw a vertical line and run across the sets, if more then one point cross the line at a time, then those points are not a function, this is called a vertical line test
