students will leave the drama club and some students
will join. If d is the number of students who will join the
drama club, write an expression to represent the total
number of students in the drama club next year.

Let d = number Of drama club members

let y = number of yearbook club members

now you can write two equations, one for the total number of students, and one for the difference between them.

d + y =64

d - y = 10

to solve for d, add these two lines together (so as to remove the y’s)

2d + 0y = 74

d = 37

now substitute back into one of the formulas

d+y=64

37+y=64

subtract 37 from each side,

y = 27
