Irony is the opposite of what you expect. For example, you would not expect the teacher’s daughter to dropout of high school. That would be ironic.

Why is it ironic (not expected) that the author describes Sam McGee as “…cool and calm…” at the end of the poem?

They might have not been cool and calm, you didn't add the story
