N Level 2017 1 Bryan is using a ladder which is 4.5 m long. He puts it against a wall so that the bottom of the ladder is 1.2 m from the wall. 4.5 1.2 The safe working angle for a ladder is between 74º and 76° to the horizontal. Is the ladder in a safe position for Bryan to use? Show the working on which you base your decision.

Given:

Length of ladder = 4.5 meters

Length between ladder and wall = 1.2 meter

To find:

If the angle of the ladder is between 74° - 76°

Steps:

We know,

cos(x) =
(adjacent)/(hypotenuse)

Here 'x' is the angle of the ladder. Substituting the values,

cos(x) = (1.2)/(4.5)

x = cos^(-1)((1.2)/(4.5) )

x = cos^(-1)(0.2666)

Now we can either use natural cos table or use aa calculator, i am going to use the calculator but if you want to know how to do it with the table, pls comment to this answer.

x = 74.533°

Since x > 74° and x < 76°, it is safe for work

Therefore, the angle is in the safe position for Bryan to use

Happy to help :)
