x = 20, y = 70

Explanation:

The angle adjacent to 40° is 180° - 40° = 140°

Since the triangle on the right has 2 congruent sides then it is isosceles and its base angles are congruent, both x

2x + 140 = 180 ← sum of 3 angles in triangle

Subtract 140 from both sides

2x = 40 ( divide both sides by 2 )

x = 20

The angle inside the triangle on the left is 90° - 20° = 70° , then

y = 180 - (40 + 70) = 180 - 110 = 70
