A sample of gas in a balloon has an initial temperature of 25 °C and a volume of 1.65x103 L. If the temperature changes to 77 °C, and there is no change of pressure or amount of gas, what is the new volume, V2, of the gas? Express your answer with the appropriate units.​

Answer: 1.94 x 10^3 L

Explanation

If the question gives you givens of temperature and volume with no change in pressure, then you must apply Charles Law: V1/T1 = V2/T2, where temperatures must be in Kelvin, K.

To convert °C to K, you add +273 to it.

1.65 x 10^3/ (25+273) = V2/ (77+273)

Cross multiplying to find V2 will give you a volume of ≈ 1,937.9 L

The number of significant figures in the given volume is 3, so therefore your new volume must also be 3 significant figures.

= 1.94 x10^3
