The reporter goes there to get “any statement” he can get. He goes to Gatsby’s house to get his statement because he is dedicated to his future and doesn’t care if it’s his day off. This makes the theme of the American dream come up. The reported works hard for what he wants and was grasping at straws to get anything he could get
