Explanation:

The altitude from the vertex to the base bisects the base and divides the triangle into 2 right triangles.

Using one of the right triangles with legs 8 and 15 , then hypotenuse h is

h² = 8² + 15² = 64 + 225 = 289 ( take the square root of both sides )

h =
√(289) = 17

The 2 congruent sides of the isosceles triangle are 17 cm

Then the perimeter P is

P = 17 + 17 + 16 = 50 cm
