I had to look up 'balanced hanger' because that was not a term from my own math education, but I found it no problem.

See the attached picture.

There are 2 x's on the left and 4 1's on the right.

This means the equation has 2 x's on the left of the equal sign and 4 1's on the right.

Each unit of different size should be in a different shape.

The idea is that the hanger 'balances', just like a set of scales, or the same way an equation balances both sides.
