Wednesday, the temperature was 60

F at 11AM and 36
F at 3PM. If the temperature
fell at a constant rate from 10AM to 3PM on that day, what was the temperature at
2PM rounded up to the nearest degree?

Answer:

Explanation:

The x-coordinate is the number of hours since 11:00am, and the y-coordinate is the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.

(0, 60)

(4, 36)

(change in temp)/(hours) = (36-60)/4 = (-24 degrees)/(4 hours) = (-6 degrees)/hour

y = -6x + 60

2:00pm is three hours after 11:00am

y = -6·3 + 60 = 42

Temperature is 42°F at 2:00pm
