Explain why gas such as oxygen is compressed in tanks.

It is compressed so that the volume is reduced making it easier to transport via gas tanks. However, it must not be exposed to high temperature because the pressure inside the tank will increase more than the tank can hold resulting to explosions. The gas has to be decompressed to atmospheric before it can be inhaled.
