Jason spent $30 at a baseball game. He spent $10 on the ticket, $12 on nachos, and he bought a soda. He does not remember how much the soda was. Which of the following is an equation that can help him solve for his missing soda price?

The answer is A) 10 + 12 + j = 30

Even though the question is asking for an equation that would help find the missing soda price, j won’t be behind the equal sign because $30 is how much Jason spent in total. The ticket price, plus the nachos, plus the soda price equal 30 dollars, so A) would be the best option.

In order to solve the equation, since we’re dealing with money here and trying to reach $30, adding up the price of the ticket and the nachos makes the most sense:

10+12+j=30
22+j=30

$22 plus the soda price is $30, so in order to find j, find the difference between 22 and 30 ( basically 30-22) which is 8. the soda price was $8

To check your work, plug in $8 in place of j like this:

10+12+8

If the equation equals 30 (which it does), then the j value you came up with is right.
