2. Gold was highly valued, so with more gold, the US became a wealthier nation. When a nation has the money and resources, it can build an army, and a large Industrial society.

3. Some unintended consequences were the affects on natural wildlife and vegetation. Mining doesn't leave a pretty sight in its wake. Wildlife would be displaced and vegetation would be destroyed. A long term affect is less natural beauty for a mine that only lasted a short time. A short term affect would be the wildlife displacement. We can solve these problems by valuing other minerals, other than gold and silver.
