Answer: Jesse has 50 nickels and 10 quarters

Explanation:

set up a system of equation

q is quarters and n is nickels

q+40=n is the first equation

.05n+.25q = 5 or 5n+25q=500

solve by substitution

5(q+40)+25q=500

5q+200+25q=500

30q=300

q=10

substitute back into the original equation

10+40=n

50=n
