I have to figure out what x is and it can't be a decimal number please help.

x = 9

Explanation:

5x - (8x -17) = -10

Rewrite the equation and take away the brackets:

5x - 8x + 17 = -10

5x - 8x = -10 - 17

5x - 8x = -27

-3x = -27

x = -27 ÷ -3

x = 9
