As stated by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), a disaster can be defined as "a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental losses and impacts which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society".

Answer:

A disaster is a serious disruption to the functioning of a community, which causes human, material, economic and environmental losses beyond a community's ability to cope. Disaster management aims to lessen the impacts of disasters, minimizing losses of life and property.
