Explanation:

  • know the formula and plug in

formula: a^2 + b^2 = c^2

  • now plug in what we have
  • whatever the RIGHT ANGLE points to is the HYPOTENUSE or c
  • the other two sides are the "legs" or a and b

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

7^2 + b^2 = 9^2

49 + b^2 = 81

b^2 = 32

b = 4
√(2)

  • in this case, b would be used as x

x = 4
√(2) or 5.6568 (exact value)
