How is it possible that one bacterium does not have alleles?

Because prokaryotes only have one chromosome, so they generally only have one allele for a particular gene. Many eukaryotes have 2 sets of chromosomes and thus 2 alleles of each gene, which may be the same or different. For example in humans, we have 46 chromosomes or 23 pair.
