Given that point J is on line segment IK , then

IJ + JK = IK ( substitute values ) and solve for x

3x - 5 + 2x - 1 = 3x + 2 ( collect like terms on left side )

5x - 6 = 3x + 2 ( subtract 3x from both sides )

2x - 6 = 2 ( add 6 to both sides )

2x = 8 ( divide both sides by 2 )

x = 4

Then

JK = 2x - 1 = 2(4) - 1 = 8 - 1 = 7
