aA group of college students are going to a lake house for the weekend and plan on renting small cars and large cars to make the trip. Each small car can hold 4 people and each large car can hold 6 people. The students rented 3 more large cars than small cars, which altogether can hold 58 people. Answer:

Hi,
number of small cars rented = 4

number of large cars rented =7

Explanation:

Let's assume

  • s the number of small cars rented
  • l the number of large cars rented

The students rented 3 more large cars than small cars: l=s+3

Cars altogether can hold 58 people : 4*s+6*l=58

We substitue l with s+3 : 4s+6*(s+3)=58

We distribue: 4s+6s+18=58

10s=58-18

10s=40

s=4

l=s+3=4+3=7

Proof: 4*4+7*6=16+42=58
