What do you think the statement really meant to Jefferson and the men who revised his draft—considering that they went on to form a government in which slavery was legal, women could not vote, and Native Americans were called “merciless Indian savages”? Answer:

What he really meant was that the American colonists, as a people, had the same rights of self-government as other peoples, and hence could declare independence, create new governments and assume their “separate and equal station” among other nations.

Yeah how about you stop being lazy and write the essay yourself. This should be your perspective not someone else’s.
