There are 3500 students at Northeastern High School and 14 of these students are seniors. If 35 of the seniors are in favor of the school forming a debate team and 15 of the remaining students (not seniors) are also in favor of forming a debate team, how many students are opposed to this idea?

Answer:

3450

Explanation:

To find out how many students are opposed to forming a debate team, you can subtract the number of students in favor from the total number of students.

First, find the number of seniors who are in favor:

35 seniors are in favor.

Now, find the number of non-seniors who are in favor:

There are 3500 total students, and 14 are seniors, so there are 3500 - 14 = 3486 non-seniors.

Out of these non-seniors, 15 are in favor.

Now, add the number of seniors and non-seniors who are in favor:

35 (seniors) + 15 (non-seniors) = 50 students in favor.

Finally, subtract this number from the total number of students to find how many are opposed:

3500 (total students) - 50 (in favor) = 3450 students are opposed to forming a debate team.

So, 3450 students are opposed to this idea.
