Rational number can only be expressed as a fraction where the numerator and denominator is an integer.

Example: 1/2, 5 = 5/1, -3/2, 0=0/1

√72 is irrational number since it is not a perfect square and after simplified you will have a left over square root. Which will make the number irrational since it cannot be expressed as a fraction with integers.
