In a company, the ratio of the number of men to the number of women is 2 : 3. ¼ of the men are part-time ⅓ of the women are part-time There are 12 part-time workers at the company. Work out how many workers there are in total.

Answer: 40 workers total

Explanation:

Let m= total men

w = total women

men / women = 2 /3

Part time men = 1/4 of men

Part time women= 1/3 of women


total part time = (1/4)*m + (1/3)*w

12 = (1/4)*m + (1/3)*w

And m/w = 2/3

3m = 2w

12 = m/4 + (3m/2)*(1/3)

12 = m/4 + m/2

12 = 3m/4

4 = m/4

m = 16 men

w = 3m/2 = 3*16/2 = 3*8 = 24 women

Total workers : 16 + 24 = 40 workers
