Let's call the number of hits Washington had as "W" and the number of hits Sanchez had as "S." According to the information given, we have two equations:

1. Washington had 4 more hits than Sanchez: W = S + 4
2. The total number of hits is 214: W + S = 214

Now, we can solve this system of equations. Substituting the value of W from the first equation into the second equation:

(S + 4) + S = 214

Combine like terms:

2S + 4 = 214

Subtract 4 from both sides:

2S = 214 - 4
2S = 210

Now, divide by 2:

S = 210 / 2
S = 105

So, Sanchez had 105 hits. Now, we can find Washington's hits using the first equation:

W = S + 4
W = 105 + 4
W = 109

Therefore, Washington had 109 hits. So, Washington had 109 hits, and Sanchez had 105 hits.
