west coast

Many of the migrants, known as the Exodusters, fled the South after Reconstruction, seeking land and opportunity in Kansas. During the late 1870s and early 1880s, as many as 40,000 African Americans migrated from the South to Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado.

A. The Great Plains

The Exodusters were African Americans who migrated to the Great Plains region of the United States, particularly Kansas, in the late 19th century, following the Reconstruction era. They sought better economic opportunities and freedom from the harsh conditions and racial discrimination in the Southern states.
