Check the picture below.

we know F is the midpoint of BC and E is the midpoint of CF, so in short F cuts BC in two equal halves and E cuts CF into two equal halves, so the distance FE is really 1/4 of BC and likewise the distance EC is also 1/4 of BC. We know BC is 16, and since the distance BE, that is from B all the way through the midpoint and to 1/4 more is well, is 3/4 of BC, and 3/4 of 16 is 12.

At point D we're at the midpoint of AC, so if we were to draw a line parallel to be base BC, as you can see in the picture a line in red, a parallel line to BC from D will land on the midpoint of AB as you see there, so the distance from D down to the line BC is 6.

Now, what the hell all that means?

well, we're looking at a triangle, shaded in orange there, with a base of 12 and a height of 6, let's get its area.


A=\cfrac{1}{2}(\underset{b}{12})(\underset{h}{6})\implies \boxed{A=36~cm^2}
