First you have to do what is inside the parenthesis to 3+1.

1+2[4x5]

Then you multiply 4 x 5 which equals 20.

so, 1+2x20

Then multiplication come first so 20 x 2 = 40.

Lastly, you add 40 + 1 = 41.
