To "solve for r" means to get "r" by itself. We need to "take away" or "undo" anything that's affecting r.

That -6 is affecting r, right? So if you add 6 to that side of the equation it will cancel that out. But you have to do the same thing go the other side of the equation! So it looks like this:

r/5 - 6 + 6 = -1 + 6

Make sure you see that: all I did was add 6 to both sides of the equation. Now simplify:

r/5 = 5 Good so far?

Now r is just being divided by 5. And how do we "undo" division? With multiplication, right? So multiply both sides by 5:

5 x r/5 = 5 x 5 5 times 1/5 = 1, so it becomes:

r = 25
